Location Based Social Networks Links

The list of Location Based Social Networking, Location Based Social Apps and Games sites

So here is the list I compiled while looking for Location Based Social Networking sites. On Dec 2010 I started to add also Location Based Social Apps and Games.

Please note it is not my intention to recommend or endorse any of them, and they are presented in alphabetical order.

I encourage you to leave comments about your experience with any of them. Those in RED are discontinued, stop development, closed or not 100% functional. I put a separate section on the bottom from Dec-10, as they grew in number.

IMPORTANT: Due to the incredible amount of apps of this type, this list was discontinued on 2010…

A 2017 new year resolution: I’d like to update the list – Please leave a comment, contact me, or fill the short form at the bottom of the page with the name of a location based social app / games and I’ll try to keep it fresh.

My Adventures – Location Based Social Network for Outdoor Enthusiasts

URL: http://www.myadventures.com/

Excerpt from the website : “…

MyAdventures.com was created to fill a huge void.

Outdoor enthusiasts want to share, socialize, and gain recognition for their adventurous deeds. And to make new friends for future adventures.

That was difficult before this social network was developed.

There are hundreds of travel sites set up to sell travel. And there are hundreds of social networks set up to support idle chatter. But there’s only one site that enables outdoor adventurers to both share their trips with current friends and to meet new friends. That site is MyAdventures.com.

The inspiration for this site stems from my lifetime of adventure and world travel and all the wonderful people I have met from the Australian Aborigines to the Kalahari Bushmen and the polar-living Inuits to my fellow members in The Adventurers Club of Chicago, The Adventurers Club of Los Angeles and The Explorers Club of New York.

The motto of The Adventurers Club of Chicago fits MyAdventures.com quite well—“to provide a hearth and home for those who have left the beaten path and made for adventure”.

Helen Keller’s comment sums it all up “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing”. If you feel the same way you’re an adventurer… and I hope you’ll join this site.

My sincerest welcome

DodgeBall Location Based Social Network

URL: http://www.dodgeball.com

Excerpt from the website :“… What is it? dodgeball.com is a new social networking site built specifically for mobile phones.
What does it do? Give me an example. The idea is simple: tell us where you are and we’ll tell you who and what is around you. We’ll ping your friends with your whereabouts, let you know when friends-of-friends are within 10 blocks, allow you to broadcast content to anyone within 10 blocks of you or blast messages to your groups of friends. For example, you’re having drinks at Ace Bar. Send a text message to 36343 (“dodge”) with the message “@Ace Bar” and we’ll send out a text message telling all your friends where you are AND send you back a message letting you know if any friends-of-friends are within 10 blocks. If you have a camera phone, we’ll even send you their picture.
How is this different from other social networking sites?
dodgeball is designed to help you meet up with friends and friends-of-friends while you’re out, not while you’re sitting in front of your computer. Try it out, next time you meet a friend for drinks… tell us where you are and we’ll let all your friends know of your whereabouts and alert you if…”

So as I mentioned in my original post regarding Location Based Social Networks, the general impression I had after putting all of them together in one page is that many of the LBSN are “me too” applications, and at this point I can’t pinpoint one that present a marketing message with a unique offer, a distinctive value proposition or main differentiators from the others. I included standalone sites, and applications that complement as add-on Social Networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Flicker, YouTube, etc.

Thanks

You should probably add Facebook Places to this great list.

I didn’t know about many of these. Thanks for the info.

Your list is a real great overview of the LBS market. It would be great if you could also integrate Dailyplaces – a mobile recommendation platform for places.

Your list is grand impression.

You should include goGlyph in your list. A simple app that allows you to “drop a glyph” at a location. No need to friend or follow anyone to see their messages since they are tied to a place

I’ll add it in my next review. Thank you!!! 🙂

Excellent list.

Please consider adding CarZar to it as well – it’s the 1st location based picture sharing app for the automotive industry. (Think Foursquare for pictures of cool cars.)

Thanks!

Hi Eric,
Thank you your feedback and the link. I checked that site, and is indeed a pic sharing site, but I couldn’t find the location component. Any idea?
Claudio

While it’s not used for social networking, I have a mobile calendar that’s location based using GPS. I think it’s so amazing you are able to fit GPS and so many other things into a phone. It’s amazing how far we have come in the last ten years.

Good list! Coloci (http://www.coloci.com) is a location based social and professional networking tool that helps you network efficiently and catch up with connections/friends, as you go about your busy life. Hi Claudio, I wanted to let you know about BodSix, my company that’s developing location-based social games for mobile devices. The first game will be launched in late summer. I’d appreciate it if you could add us to your list. You can read more about us on our website: http://www.bodsix.com.

Separately, you might want to move whrrl down to the “red zone” as they’ve discontinued their service since being acquired by Groupon several months back.

Hi Jeff,
Thank you for your note. I moved Whrll and look fw to your new game.
Best,
Claudio

Syncuz for Android and iPhone combines maps, location data and messaging to enable groups of people to synchronize with one another when organising any type of event. From arranging a business meeting or a meal out to co-ordinating a skiing group, Syncuz puts maps and messaging on one screen so you can see at a glance where and what is happening.
An app that is useful, simple and fun.

Hi Claudio,

Wow, what an comprehensive list with LBSN sites. Really impressive work you’ve put into this list.

But I’m still missing an important site ;-). I’m talking about Stor-I.com (speak as store-eye, from storing yourself). Stor-I.com is not only a Location Based Social Network, it’s a Location and Time Based Social Network.

The site is meant for personal experiences and stories, and every single story is linked to time and location of occurrence. This link is visualized through a so-called timemap, divided in a timeline and a map. Both can be moved with the mouse and users can use it to travel through time and location in search of interesting stories. Don’t forget to have a look at the instructional video under “Click on this line for a short video on how to use the timemap”.

Stor-I.com is very unique as this link between a story and its location and time has not been done before (as far as I know). Stor-I wants to become a storage place for all our personal stories, to prevent these stories from getting lost in time. Think about it, all these stories will make Stor-I become a huge source of fascinating information; lessons learned, eyewitness reports of events, vacation descriptions, inspiring stories, just plain stories about more or less important personal experiences, and much more. All visually retrievable based on time and place.

I would appreciate it if you could have a look at Stor-I and let me know if you’d like to add it to your list.

Thanks,
Michel

Hi Michael,
Thank you for your note,.
I took note of the site and will add it to the list.
Best luck,
Claudio

Hi, thanks for the list it was a really good reference for me. I was wondering if it might be possible to add a site of mine that is location based. The site is called http://www.spiffiedeals.com/ — its still in development but I am trying to get the word out about it and I thought this list would be a really good place to have a back link or some sort of reference about it at.

The site has been up for about a month and half (june). But, the main goal is to have deals and groups topics from a given area in the area section.

hey there 🙂 you forgot one important lbs! mine 😉

i would be so happy, if you could add it!

HI, one more for the list! 🙂

“A powerful new social mapping service that helps you discover places relevant to you, plan routes between them & stay connected while on the road.”

get-together 2.0 with data privacy

I will introduce you TrackRoom 1.0 and TrackRoom 1.0 Lite, which lets you temporarily track the position of selected smartphone users in your contacts, so you can always find your friends and family members in crowded locations or large groups. You can also use TrackRoom as a tool for inviting all your shared contacts to any desired location.

TrackRoom is perfect to use when you want to find someone fast, like when you’re out on the town with a bunch of friends or when you have arranged to meet up at a concert or similar large-scale event. With TrackRoom, if you ever lose a friend or a family member in a crowd, finding them again is easy. Or when you’re out in open spaces, on a hike, sailing or just want to show friends where you are, TrackRoom can help.

When you close a TrackRoom, all position data is automatically deleted. TrackRoom only saves the last transmitted position. The app does not collect data, so it never creates a movement profile. TrackRoom automatically shows all your contacts that already have their mobile numbers registered with TrackRoom, so there’s no time-consuming selection of contacts. All contacts you invite to a TrackRoom are notified with a push notification. After accepting an invitation, you will see the current position shown on the map in TrackRoom, and all positions are automatically updated. TrackRoom also features a group chat, to give you the ability to exchange messages with your selected contacts. Chat messages are also sent to the users’ smartphones in a push notification.
Pricing and Availability:
TrackRoom 1.0 is only $0.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Social Networking category. The Lite version is free.

With social networks becoming more localized, for my Masters Thesis at NYU, I am focusing on location-based services (LBS). The study aims to understand how the three key factors—practical functions, fun & games, privacy risk—affect the adoption of location-based services applications. Please do a good deed, fill out this short and completely anonymous survey (https://www.113.vovici.net/se.ashx?s=13B2588B58E0782D). Please email me if you like a copy of this study. Thanks. Will,
Good luck with your Thesis. Please see my other published material at http://www.georillas.com/blog you will find a few articles on behavioral models and best practices.

Maracas Software LLC would like to announce a new Private Location-Based Social Networking Service called geoPhotoBlog available for Android devices.

What separates geoPhotoBlog from other social applications is that your social media is only shared with the people in your contact list

that you have authorized to view such content, making it a private social network. This application provides our users a way to locate each other,

share photos, send free geoText Messages…etc.

Due to the private nature of geoPhotoBlog, we overcome any privacy issues related to other location-based services. Users can now share sensitive

social media content such as their current location they normally would not want shared on other public social networks.

When a user first starts geoPhotoBlog, our system returns the current locations of anyone in their private social network by plotting

the contact photo of that person on the map at their current location. It also plots the location of any photos and getText messages.

The user then touches on these icons for more options and information.

Other features that geoPhotoBlog offers are:

– See the current location of anyone in your contact list on the map (providing they too are geoPhotoBlog users).

– Free world-wide geoText messaging service to any other geoPhotoBlog users. See on the map where the text message was sent from.

– Share photos with other geoPhotoBlog users. The photos you share will show on the map at the location where you took the picture.

– Facebook and Twitter support allows you to easily post your photos to your Facebook wall or tweet your photos.

– You can even text message your photos to anyone in your contact list.

– Ability to post your current status for others to view.

– Complete control over who is allowed to locate, view your photos and geoText message via the Authorization list.

– Hide feature allows you to quickly hide yourself from everyone. Turn off the hide feature when you are ready

for others to locate you.

– User defined settings on how often you want your current location updated.

– User defined settings on how often you want to track the current location of others.

– The current address of the person you are locating will be printed at top of the map along with the distance between you and them.

– When viewing a Photo, the address of the location where the photo was tagged will be printed at the top of the map along with the distance between you and where the photo was taken.

– Provide comments on other people’s photos via emoticons and text comments.

Visit http://www.geophotoblog.com for more information or email support@geophotoblog.com for and questions and/or suggestion.

Sincerely,

Keith Brooking

Thanks Claudio for taking the time to put together this list! It really is freaking awesome! Have you thought about adding a rating system where people can rate each one? I guess that would defeat the neutral purpose.

Hi Claudio,

Just defended my dissertation on “trust in LBSN.” Tested the research model on Facebook Places (Nearby, or whatever it’s called this week).

Would love to work with a few other providers to retest the model and also look at a few other motivations for individuals to participate in location-sharing interactions. Give a shout if you or anyone else you know would be interested in participating in a study.

Thanks,
